Sherman Brothers A to Z: A Spoonful of Sugar

Today. I begin sharing songs from the Sherman Brother’s Catalog of movie songs they have written over the years. I am doing this for A to Z Challenge, So i’ll be sharing them in alphabetical order on a daily basis. All the lyrics were written by the Sherman Brothers and I have pulled all the lyrics from pages of The Sherman Brothers Wiki at Fandom. Since the A to Z people take off Sundays and since not all of you may know a lot about the Sherman Brothers each Sunday I will be posting a little about them. Click here to see yesterdays post about them.

Today we start with A Spoonful of Sugar from the 1964 film Mary Poppins. Since I also started in 1964, I thought this would be a good place to begin.

Mary Poppins: [spoken] In ev’ry job that must be done There is an element of fun You find the fun and snap! The job’s a game [sung] And ev’ry task you undertake Becomes a piece of cake A lark! A spree! It’s very clear to see that…

A spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down The medicine go down-wown The medicine go down Just a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down In a most delightful way!

A robin feathering his nest Has very little time to rest While gathering his bits of twine and twig Though quite intent in his pursuit He has a merry tune to toot He knows a song will move the job along – for…

A spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down The medicine go down-wown The medicine go down Just a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down In a most delightful way!

[Interlude]

The honey bee that fetch the nectar From the flowers to the comb Never tire of ever buzzing to and fro Because they take a little nip From ev’ry flower that they sip And hence (and hence), They find (they find) Their task is not a grind.

Ah-h-h-h-h-h-h-h-h-h-h ah!

A spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down The medicine go down-wown The medicine go down Just a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down In a most delightful way!

  1. That’s a fun theme. I never really thought about who were the songsmiths for Mary Poppins.

Thanks for visiting my guinea pigs, by the way. They are thrilled. But no, they don’t eat sugar, unless it’s naturally occurring in vegetables. And then they’re limited!

  2. The Sherman Brothers were incredible. All the songs they wrote for Disney. They say Walt would call them in to sing “Feed The Birds” when he was feeling down. Kind of a downer of a song, to be honest, but hey, Walt liked it…
